Practical, jargon-free answers to the questions our Kolkata patients ask us every day.
Why oral hygiene matters far beyond your mouth
Modern research is unambiguous: the health of your gums is closely linked with the health of the rest of your body. Chronic gum inflammation has been associated with a higher risk of heart disease, poorer blood sugar control in diabetics, complications in pregnancy, and even respiratory infections in older adults. When bacteria from infected gums enter the bloodstream, they trigger low-grade inflammation everywhere they travel. In other words, brushing and flossing aren't only about a nice smile — they're one of the cheapest, most powerful preventive-health habits you can build.
The common dental problems — and what actually causes them
Four issues account for the vast majority of visits to any dental clinic in Kolkata. Cavities form when acid-producing bacteria sit on your teeth for hours, dissolving enamel — sipping sweet chai through the day is a bigger culprit than a single dessert. Gum disease starts silently: bleeding when you brush is the earliest warning, and untreated it eventually loosens teeth. Sensitivity is usually an enamel or gum-recession issue caused by aggressive horizontal brushing. Bad breath is almost always a bacterial film on the tongue and between the teeth — a good tongue-cleaner and floss work faster than any mouthwash on the market.
How often should you see a dentist?
For an adult with healthy gums, a professional cleaning and check-up every six months is enough. If you smoke, have diabetes, wear braces, or have a history of gum disease, we suggest every three to four months. Children should be seen twice a year from age three onwards, with fluoride and sealants applied as needed. Waiting until something hurts is the single most common — and most expensive — mistake we see.
Common procedures, explained in plain language
Scaling and polishing is the removal of hardened tartar with an ultrasonic tool. It does not weaken teeth — this is one of the most persistent myths in India. A root canal saves a tooth whose nerve is infected; with modern rotary tools it's typically painless and done in one sitting. An extraction is reserved for teeth that genuinely cannot be saved. An implant replaces a missing tooth with a titanium root and a ceramic crown — the closest thing to a natural tooth we have. Braces or aligners straighten misaligned teeth over 12–24 months, improving both appearance and long-term gum health.
Myths vs facts
Myth: scaling weakens teeth. Fact: scaling removes bacterial deposits that were weakening your teeth and gums; the "gap" you feel afterwards was already there, hidden by tartar.
Myth: only sweet food causes cavities. Fact: any refined carbohydrate — biscuits, chips, white bread — feeds cavity bacteria just as effectively.
Myth: whitening damages teeth. Fact: dentist-supervised whitening is safe. It's the internet kits that cause harm.
Myth: baby teeth don't matter. Fact: they hold space for adult teeth and shape a child's bite for life.
Caring for your child's teeth
Start cleaning gums with a soft cloth even before the first tooth appears. Once teeth emerge, use a rice-grain amount of fluoride toothpaste under age three, and a pea-sized amount thereafter. Avoid bottle-feeding at night and never dip pacifiers in honey or sugar. Bring your child in for their first visit by age one — the goal of this visit is comfort and familiarity, not treatment. Our Park Street branch has a dedicated child-care setup designed to make dental visits something kids actually look forward to.
Diet and dental health
What you eat matters, but how often you eat it matters even more. Every time sugar or refined starch touches your teeth, an acid attack begins that lasts about 20–30 minutes. Grazing all day means your teeth barely get a break. A few practical rules: drink water after every meal, finish sweet or acidic foods within a single sitting rather than sipping them over hours, prefer whole fruits over juices, and include calcium-rich foods (paneer, curd, ragi, leafy greens) in your daily plate. And yes — chewing sugar-free gum for 10 minutes after a meal genuinely does help by stimulating saliva.
A simple daily routine that works
Brush twice a day for two full minutes with a soft brush, floss once a day (any time — bedtime is easiest to remember), clean your tongue every morning, rinse with plain water after every snack, and get a professional cleaning every six months. That's it. There is no expensive gadget, imported paste or Instagram trend that beats these basics done consistently.

"I had been postponing my root canal for months out of fear. Dr. Ansari and his team at the Park Street clinic were so patient — I honestly did not feel a thing. The clinic is spotless and the staff explained every step in Bangla and English."
"Got my braces done at the Beck Bagan branch. Two years later my smile is completely transformed. Fair pricing, monthly reminders on WhatsApp, and no hidden costs."
"Took my 4-year-old daughter for her first cleaning at the Bosepukur clinic. The doctor sat with her, showed her the tools, and made it feel like a game. She actually asked when we can go back!"
"I lost a molar in an accident and got an implant done here. The CBCT scan, planning and the surgery were all handled in one place. Six months on, it feels like my own tooth."
"Went in for whitening before my wedding. The result was natural, not the fake pearl-white you see elsewhere. Loved the follow-up call the next day to check sensitivity."
"Emergency visit on a Sunday morning after a fractured tooth — they accommodated me within an hour. Genuinely grateful."
"Regular scaling and polishing here for the last three years. The hygiene protocol is visible — sealed instruments, gloves changed in front of you. That matters."
"Wisdom tooth extraction was a breeze. Almost no swelling next day. Dr. Ansari also gave me a detailed diet chart for recovery."
